This spring the students continued to practice Visual Thinking Strategies. The students enjoyed looking closely at a variety of art images and answering the questions - What is going on in this picture? What do you see that makes you say that? What more can we find? The students learned about Holi, a Hindu celebration of color and love, by looking at images depicting the celebrations from the past and present. The students were inspired by the colors and worked with chalk pastels to create colorful backgrounds for their simile poems.

The Second Graders enjoyed reading about John James Audubon and were inspired by his love of birds and his interest in drawing his observations in his sketchbooks. This winter the Second Graders immersed themselves in the world of Japanese ink painting or sumi-e. At the beginning of each art class, the students practiced putting their “eyes on the art”. They looked at a sumi-e image silently and then considered the following Visual Thinking questions: What is going on in this picture? What do you see that makes you say that? What more can we find? The students were also excited to explore the four treasures of sumi-e: the ink stick, grinding stone, bamboo brush, and paper. With focus and control of the brush, the students practiced the four of the basic sumi-e brush strokes: pulling, pressure, side, and smooshing. They used these strokes to create scroll paintings inspired by nature. Check out the artists at work in the videos below. |
