I have the great privilege of working with the young artists at Nashoba Brooks. Everyday I am fascinated by the inherent beauty in the art of children. To preserve this sense of honesty, I offer my students a balance of technical instruction and freedom for discovery. The rhythms and imaginations of the children define the boundaries of the art curriculum within a disciplined and structured environment. In this way, the studio offers children the complex, rich, and safe environment that they deserve to explore essential questions through art. The art curriculum develops critical thinking skills by engaging children in the discussion of art criticism, the study of aesthetics and art history, and the creative process.
By offering all children a variety of gateways into the world of art, I hope to provide them with a place for their young voices to be seen and heard. By bringing elements of the home, community, and nature into the classroom, we learn more about each other and are inspired to look more closely at our world. Constant reflection and evaluation engages students in their own art work and the art around them. By teaching children first to see the similarities in our world and then the differences, I hope to model and inspire a more thoughtful population of students in our school.
My experience as an artist and work with children has shaped my direction as an art teacher. I have been teaching at NBS since 2006 and live in West Concord with my three daughters, Audrey, Elsa, and Lena, and my husband who teaches Latin at Brookline High School.
